Long before Hanah Mountain Resort & Country Club came to be, in 1919 Max Kass purchased a six room farmhouse and 387 acres along the East Branch of the Delaware River between Margaretville and Roxbury in New York’s Catskill Mountains. With the founding of Kass Inn, Max and his wife Sadie catered to tourists and golfers from the city and local surroundings. In 1949, they added a nine hole golf course, built by Frank Wilson of Roxbury to provide recreation to their guests. Over the years, the small inn became known for its welcoming hospitality, stunning location, mountainside golf course, fine food, and charming antiques.
A world away, Koji Nagasaka, the owner of Koizumi Limited, a Tokyo-based investment firm, had a soft spot for the Catskills. An avid golfer, he was also an American movie aficionado. At the time, his favorite movie was Dirty Dancing, a film set at a small Catskill Mountain resort. Nagasaka fell in love with the Catskills, the culture, and the resort life it was known for. In 1989, he discovered Kass Inn for sale, and Hanah Mountain Resort & Country Club was born.
Over the next decade, Nagasaka and his team moved the inn to the top of Hubbell Hill, where it is perched today, overlooking the golf course, river, and mountain views. At the same time, Nagasaka designed a brand new golf course, doubling it in size. Eventually, he added a 19th hole, which has been dubbed “The Terminator” by Golf Digest. The golf course is open daily to the public and offers several enticing levels of membership.
The grand opening of the restaurant, pub, indoor pool, and lodging took place in 2004.
Ever since, Hanah has been home to vacationers looking for the Catskills’ brand of quiet charm and beauty, family friendly accommodations, and proximity to many recreational activities—world class golf, of course, as well as skiing, fly fishing, kayaking, antiquing, hiking, swimming, apple picking, etc. An exquisite setting for wedding celebrations and other special events, Hanah is a hidden gem on its secluded post atop the mountain. Above it all, Hanah holds tight to the traditions of Catskill resort life, offering generations of guests the gift of rest and relaxation, and the full service comfort one expects from a classic mountain getaway.
